To showcase research and its importance to the agricultural industry in its region, the University of Georgia Southeast Research and Education Center in Midville, Ga., will have a field day Aug. 19.
Participants will see the latest work by UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences experts on twin-row soybeans, fungicide trials, insect control and official state variety trials for corn, soybean and peanut, said Anthony Black, the center’s superintendent.
Work at the Burke County center was postponed six years ago due to budget cuts. The center reopened last summer.
“Things have really picked up since the reopening,” Black said. “We have begun a new renewable energy program that focuses on the production of biofuel feedstock crops. I would say we are about up to full speed, and irrigated research land is about full capacity.”

Fernbank Museum Announces Viewers’ Choice IMAX® Film Festival
Fernbank Museum of Natural History is putting audience members in the driver’s seat for selecting its fall line-up. The Museum will kick off an IMAX® Film Festival on August 17, showcasing 6 of the most popular IMAX® films ever shown at Fernbank.
As part of the film festival, the IMAX® schedule will change every two weeks from August 17-October 1, 2009. Fernbank is launching a Festival Flex Pass for the festival, which includes six IMAX tickets that can be used to see each film, or that can be divvied up among groups, families, friends and various films throughout the festival. The Festival Flex Pass is available for $45 for members and $60 for non-members, and can also be used for Martinis & IMAX® on Friday nights. Individual IMAX tickets are $13 for adults, $12 for students/seniors, $11 for children and $8 for members. Individual Martinis & IMAX tickets are $15.
If you want to go on a cinematic climb to the top of Mt. Everest, voyage into the depths of caves, dive into the ocean’s coral reefs, swim alongside dolphins, explore ancient Greece, take a river rafting adventure through the Grand Canyon, journey into the jungle to see gorillas, or explore another enthralling subject, you have to vote.
“This is the first time we’ve ever left the IMAX schedule completely in the hands of the public. We’re excited to see which films are people’s favorites,” said Jennifer Grant Warner, Senior Vice President and Chief Programming Officer at Fernbank Museum of Natural History. “There are a lot of compelling IMAX films that people long to see again. And because the IMAX format is so powerful, you can’t get the same experience by watching it on DVD, so this is really a great opportunity to see your favorite IMAX film again.”

Motown comes to The Fred with The Spinners
The Lexus of South Atlanta Summer concert series continues with The Spinners performing on July 17th and 18th at The Fred (Peachtree City). The legendary Motown and R& B group will take the stage each night at 9 pm, with local group Shavaughn opening at 8 pm.
The Spinners have always made timeless music. Their classic group sound and approach never loses its universal appeal. Throughout the years they have acquired twelve (12) gold records with hits on top of both Pop and R&B charts and they are one of the few groups who can boast of four lead singers. Today, original members Bobbie Smith, Henry Fambrough, and Pervis Jackson are joined onstage by leadsinger Charlton Washington, high tenor Harold “Spike” Bonhart and a soul infused5-piece band.
In 1972, The Spinners signed with Atlantic Records and teamed up with producer Thom Bell, setting into motion an amazing recording career. A partial list of their hit singles on Atlantic include “Mighty Love,” “Then Came You,” “I’ll Be Around,” “One Of A Kind (Love Affair),” “Games People Play,” and “Could It Be.” In 1979, The Spinners completed their first collaboration with producer Michael Zager, and by early 1980, the single, “Working My Way Back to You,” was topping Pop and R&B charts giving the group its 12th gold record. The Love Trippin’ album’s release included “The Cupid Medley,” one of the fastest selling records in The Spinners’ career. The follow-up album, Labor of Love, featured such standout tunes as “Yesterday Once More,” and “Long Live Soul Music.” With the release of “Can’t Shake This Feeling,” their fourth LP in just over two years, the quintet entered a brand new phase of their remarkable career as they joined the award winning producing/ writing/playing team of James
Mtume and Reggie Lucas. Other past releases include songs on the motion picture soundtracks of “Twins” and “Spaceballs,” and a single on Arista Records, a duet with Dionne Warwick entitled “Then Came You.”

Environmental Film Festival Comes to the Coast This Fall
Franklin County will host the nationally acclaimed Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour August 29 - September 5 in Carrabelle, Apalachicola, St. George Island, St. Teresa and neighboring Wewahitchka in Gulf County. Organized by the Apalachicola Riverkeeper Group, the week-long film festival will feature award-winning films and a children's program designed to raise awareness about environmental issues nationwide.
The films will be shown in the historic Dixie Theatre in Apalachicola, the Carrabelle City Auditorium, FSU's Coastal and Marine Laboratory in St. Teresa, the Volunteer Fire Department on St. George Island and the Tupelo Theater in Wewahitchka.
The 2010 Film Festival will be the second year such an event has come to North Florida. Last year, the Riverkeepers hosted a similar successful one day festival in Tallahassee. According to Riverkeeper Executive Director Andy Smith, the event's success in Tallahassee was the motivation to expand the film festival to the coast.
"Last year we hosted a one-day Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour in Tallahassee," says Smith. "Everyone loved the films for their inspirational, innovative, effective, and often humorous approach to stubborn problems. They make you feel good about what we can do to make our world a better place for everyone."
The Wild & Scenic Film Festival brings together a selection of films from the annual festival held the second week of January in Nevada City, California. "The films tell a story about our planet, highlighting issues, providing solutions and giving a call to action," says Tour Manager, Susie Sutphin. "Their collective energy empowers communities to initiate conversations that can bring about compromise and collaborative efforts that positively impact our wild places." The Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival was started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) in 2003. SYRCL is sharing their success as an environmental group with others organizations to bring the festival to over 90 communities nationwide. It is building a network of grassroots organizations connected by a common goal of using film to inspire conservation. The festival's namesake is in celebration of achieving Wild & Scenic status for 39 miles of the South Yuba River in 1999.
Some of the films scheduled include:
Water Front - 22 minutes, Liz Miller, Curtis Smith - What if you lived by the largest body of fresh water in the world but could no longer afford to use it? Residents of Highland Park, Michigan, known as the birthplace of the auto-industry, have received water bills as high as $10,000; they have had their water turned off, their homes foreclosed, and are struggling to keep water, a basic human right, from becoming privatized. The story touches on the very essence of our democratic system and is an unnerving indication of what is in store for residents around the world facing their own water struggles. Once upon a Tide - 9:15 minutes, Kathleen Frith, Mark Shelley, Drew Takahashi - A spell has been cast causing people to forget about the ocean and its importance to our lives. But with a young girl, we embark on a fantastic journey, where orcas swim through corn fields, scientists talk in rhyme, and the audience, discover how the ocean touches all parts of our Earth and nurtures our existence. Best of Show, Santa Barbara Ocean FF. Animation.
Papa Tortuga - 20 minutes, Rob and Elise Wilson - Fernando shows that one person CAN make a difference. His efforts in Tecolutla, Vera Cruz, Mexico, have helped to save the endangered Lora Sea Turtles from extinction. Best of Show, SF Ocean FF.
Gorilla in the Greenhouse: Great Pacific Garbage Patch - 8 minutes, Jay Golden, Eli Noyes, Ralph Guggenheim- Follow four kids and a green gorilla as they overcome a demented plot by Dr. Morlon Hufflebot to create an island of plastic bags in the Pacific Ocean. Animation.
"The Apalachicola ecosystem is one of the most amazing places on the planet to live and work," says Smith. "The Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour will provide a refreshing look at what folks in other part of our nation and world face and solve in their efforts to create sustainable ecological and economic environments."
The Apalachicola Riverkeepers Group was formed in 1999 as an environmental citizen's advocacy organization. This year, the group is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Since 1999, the group has worked with concerned citizens to protect the Apalachicola ecosystem and the livelihood of people who depend on it for a living. The group uses persistent advocacy to attack tough problems like the environmentally destructive dredging of the middle reaches of the river and ecologically unsustainable development. The Apalachicola Riverkeeper collaborates with diverse groups to design and implement river and shoreline restoration projects, put on educational programs like the Franklin County Seahawk - Art for the Sky, and an annual Franklin County coastal cleanup.
The Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour is sponsored, in part, by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council and national sponsors such as Patagonia, Clif Bar, Osprey Packs, Sierra Nevada Brewing and Tom's of Maine. "The Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour will provide a refreshing look at what folks in other part of our nation and world face and solve in their efforts to create sustainable ecological and economic environments."
The Apalachicola Riverkeepers Group was formed in 1999 as an environmental citizen's advocacy organization. This year, the group is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Since 1999, the group has worked with concerned citizens to protect the Apalachicola ecosystem and the livelihood of people who depend on it for a living. The group uses persistent advocacy to attack tough problems like the environmentally destructive dredging of the middle reaches of the river and ecologically unsustainable development. The Apalachicola Riverkeeper collaborates with diverse groups to design and implement river and shoreline restoration projects, put on educational programs like the Franklin County Seahawk - Art for the Sky, and an annual Franklin County coastal cleanup.

‘Fun in the Summertime’ at The Rock Ranch to Provide Fun for Families for 2 Weeks in July
While the kids are out of school, families can take an affordable day trip to enjoy train rides, pony rides, paddle boats, cane pole fishing, a petting zoo, swimming, and more…
The Rock Ranch, LLC is preparing for a two-week series of public events that will allow families to enjoy a day of fun at The Rock Ranch for only $8 per person. These hands-on, educational and entertaining day trip opportunities will begin July 14 and continue through July 25, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Rock Ranch is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
The Rock Ranch has offered educational school field trips for years and it hosts public events throughout the year with its primary season being Fall Family Fun Days on Saturdays, September through October.
“Fun in the Summertime” marks the first time the ranch has been open for public admission during the summer.
“We are excited to allow families an opportunity to visit The Rock Ranch while kids are out of school,” said Event Director Adam Pugh. “This series of events allows for children to have a full day of fun outdoors and be educated while playing with their family.”
All activities are included in the $8 admission price. Concessions will be sold or families can bring a picnic lunch.
Activities include locomotive train rides, hay rides, pony rides, paddle boats, cane pole fishing, Slide Hill, The Farmland Petting Zoo, The Corn Box, family bicycles, The Giant Jumping Pillow, swimming in the pool, The Earthworm Station, The Cow Milking Simulator, and The Georgia Wildlife Station.
Educational stations will be conducted before lunch. Some activities will be open all day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and others will be open from 1 to 5 p.m.
Picnics and coolers are allowed. No pets or alcohol will be permitted.
The Rock Ranch recently hosted its 10th anniversary of Celebrate America at The Rock Ranch. Celebrate America, an annual patriotic event, saw 7,500 guests in attendance for a day of fun, music, food and fireworks.
During Celebrate America, The Rock Ranch awarded free Chick-fil-A meals for a year to winner Pamela Davis of Barnesville, Ga. Another lucky winner, Laura Brown of The Rock, won the $5,000 first prize in the Great American Duck Derby at Celebrate America.
The Great American Duck Derby saw over 9,000 ducks race downstream at The Rock Ranch to raise money for Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center. This charity provides care for children with special needs and provides child development for all children.
The fireworks at The Rock Ranch followed a patriotic program to honor our troops and veterans that included a concert by national Christian recording artist Andrew Carlton.
“The fireworks show was amazing – they lasted forever and it was so dark when the lights were turned off at the ranch, that the fireworks really looked great, they reflected off the water and it felt like they were right up on you,” said Griffin resident Brad Glass.
Tammy Maddux of Columbus said, “Celebrate America was wonderful. It was very hot, but it was worth it! My kids loved riding the train, playing in the corn box and watching the watermelon cannon. The music was great and the fireworks were better than any I’ve seen in Georgia.”

Celebrate Father’s Day at Fernbank Museum’s Dinosaur Plaza Picnic
Give Dad an adventure for Father’s Day at Fernbank Museum. As part of Fernbank’s 90 Days of Dinosaurs celebration, the Museum will host a special Father’s Day Plaza Picnic outside on the new Dinosaur Plaza from noon to 4 p.m. on June 21.
The garden setting of the new pedestrian plaza—which features an assortment of new trees, plants and flowers—is highlighted by the addition of an outdoor dinosaur exhibition, featuring a family of three bronze hadrosaurs and a fountain.
For the Father’s Day Plaza Picnic, the plaza will be decked out with red-and-white checkered table cloths, while the Fernbank Café grills up burgers, steaks, hotdogs and more. It wouldn’t be a picnic without some good tunes and a family game (like the dinosaur scavenger hunt!), so get ready to enjoy a day that everyone will enjoy.
Other Museum happenings include the special exhibition Dinosaurs: Ancient Fossils, New Discoveries and Dinosaurs Alive! and Under the Sea on the five-story IMAX® screen. Dad won’t want to miss the 350-year-old Native dug-out canoe, considered the “minivan” of its time, or the Museum’s fossil floors that reveal sea creatures he may have encountered if he’d gone fishing 90 million years ago.
Family Picnic Packages and individual picnic items include Kobe beef burgers, steaks, hotdogs, fried chicken and fruit salad, and will be available for purchase in various price ranges to meet everyone’s budget. Air Force Reserve “Hurricane Hunter” Aircraft to Visit Peachtree City!
The public is invited to come aboard a WC-130J Hurricane Hunter Aircraft and meet the crew members who fly into hurricanes. In recognition of “Hurricane Awareness” and kick off of the 2009 Hurricane Season, the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City is teaming up with the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron to bring a heightened awareness of inland tropical storm threats.
The National Weather Service Office will also host an “Open House” to give area residents a chance to learn more about forecasts and warnings.

Travel several hundred yards and turn right onto Falcon Drive, which is the entrance to Falcon Field Airport. The National Weather Service Office will be the first building on the left. The airport is at the end of Falcon Drive.
From State Highway 85: Turn west at the intersection of 85 and 74. After several miles, turn left onto Dividend Drive. That intersection is marked with a small green sign with an airplane. Cross the railroad tracks and less than one quarter mile past the tracks, turn left onto Falcon Drive. The National Weather Service Office will be the first building on the left. The airport is at the end of Falcon Drive.

The 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season produced a record number of consecutive storms that struck the United States and ranks as one of the more active seasons in the 64 years since official records began. In 2008, Tropical Storm Fay moved inland from the Central Gulf Coast and produced at least six tornadoes across central and north Georgia. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina produced a record 18 tornadoes across the state and Hurricane Dennis produced extensive flooding with over eight inches of rain. Most of the tropical systems that affect the state of Georgia come from the gulf. Latest tropical forecasts indicate 2009 could be another active season with the Gulf Coastal Region having over a 60% chance of being hit by a named storm. Therefore, the National Weather Service Office in Peachtree City, Georgia decided to team up once again with the Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters to bring awareness to the hazards associated with tropical storms moving inland.

Fernbank’s Own “Guest Curators” Select Fascinating Objects Stored in Museum Collections for New Exhibition
Fernbank Museum of Natural History is launching a new exhibition on June 13 that showcases a collection of “My Favorite Things”—all selected by staff members from each of the Museum’s departments. Located within the recently redesigned Naturalist Center in the “Curator’s Corner,” the exhibition features 15 cases of objects from Fernbank’s permanent collections that often remain stored away in the museum’s vault.
Some of the favorite objects on display in My Favorite Things: Objects from Fernbank’s Permanent Collections include fossils, gemstones, animals, ceramics and more.
“My Favorite Things: Objects from Fernbank’s Permanent Collections is unique because it allowed the entire museum to get involved in the exhibition process,” said James Hays, Fernbank’s Vice President of Exhibitions. “It has been a lot of fun because it also gave us the opportunity to display some of the more exotic museum objects that otherwise would go unseen by visitors.”
Each department—from finance to visitor services to IT to special events and more—chose one person to act as a guest curator. In order to pick their favorite objects, the employees were given a tour of Collections, a highly secured area that many staff members have never before visited. They saw the treasure trove of objects that aren’t typically on public display and were given the opportunity to put their favorites in the spotlight.
“It was interesting to see all the cool things Fernbank has in storage. I have never seen so many unique objects at one time so it blew my mind away. I imagined Collections to be mostly gems and jewelry so I didn’t expect to see so much artwork, cultural objects and animals. It was more than I expected ,” said Museum Store Associate Tifany Bell, who chose a set of decorative African ceramic jars as her favorite things. “The Zulu jars were the most interesting because they were so creative and original.”
My Favorite Things is included with Museum admission and will be on view from June 13, 2009 through February 1, 2010. Museum admission is $15 for adults, $14 for students and seniors, and $14 for children ages 3 to 12. Museum admission is free for children ages 2 and younger and is also free for Museum members. Parents and kids can join Brendan Fraser on a voyage to another world where dinosaurs lurk around the corner in the all-new Journey to the Center of the Earth 4D Adventure. Guests of all ages can also explore the treetops on Sky Hike, the nation’s largest adventure course.

1. Guests can engage all the senses in the all-new Journey to the Center of the Earth 4D Adventure. Excitement is guaranteed in this condensed version of the popular film as the film’s explorers are plunged into a strange world beneath the Earth’s surface. Fish with razor-sharp teeth and dinosaurs will also be along for the ride.
2. Young and the young at heart can trek through the treetops on the nation’s largest adventure course, Sky Hike. SkyHikers select from a 12 ft. trail for beginners, a 24 ft. trail for the courageous or the 40 ft. trail for the true daredevil. With more than a quarter of a mile course, no two hikes are the same.
3. Families can feed a crowd at Stone Mountain Park’s new Marketplace. This open air-style market provides lots of fresh meal and snack choices. For a lighter course, pick from deli sandwiches, salads, fresh fruit, yogurt, granola or one of the many baked goods. Heartier meal options include pizza, hamburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches or chicken strips. Ice cream or freshly made fudge round out the offering
