This Friday night Callaway Gardens’® Robin Lake Beach becomes an outdoor cinema with a Movie on the Beach.
Robin Lake’s sandy beach will be the seating and the stars the backdrop for evening’s viewing of the award-winning movie Blind Side. Projected onto an inflatable, 35-foot wide screen, the movie will be shown with a digital projection system with surround sound.
Prior to show time, guests can enjoy the 8 p.m. FSU Flying High Circus’s Friday night special show Spectacular. Showtime will immediately follow at dusk (generally around 9:15 p.m.). Guests may want to bring a blanket or lawn chair. The Beach Pavilion will be open for snacks and beverages prior to the movie.
A Movie on the Beach is a great way to end a full day of family fun at Callaway Gardens. Guests visiting the Gardens during the day will be admitted to the movies at no additional cost. Day admission is $18/adult; $9/child (ages six to 12); children five and younger are admitted for free. The Gardens and its attractions are open daily during the Summer from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Beginning at 6 p.m. admission is $9/adult; $4.50/child (ages six to 12); children five and younger are admitted for free. Admission will be complimentary for annual pass holders and military (active and retired with ID) and up to five guests in the same vehicle.
Be sure to check out Callaway’s additional special Summer attractions including Iceberg Island (fee), a floating water playground, the Xcelerator (fee), the world’s largest inflatable waterslide and paddleboats (fee) - all on Robin Lake. Callaway Gardens would like to invite everyone for a FREE Friday Night of Fun and Fireworks this Friday, July 9, 2010.
After a great day of fun, sun, circus performances and a concert on July 4th, the fireworks finale was not up to Callaway Gardens’ standards. Callaway Gardens has partnered with East Coast Pyrotechnics, Inc. for more than 15 years to provide memorable firework displays. This year a failed electrical system kept some of the fireworks from launching.

Drake Field in PTC Site of Car and Motocycle Show June 12
Coweta Fayette Rotary Club is busy with last minute plans their 3rd Annual Car Show to be held at Drake Field in Peachtree City on June 12, 2010 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Dixieland To Honor Fallen Soldiers on Memorial day
A special Memorial Day Tribute honoring our local fallen heroes will be observed at dark. Dixieland has teamed up with 92.5 the Bear and Dobbins AFB to create a moving video presentation paying tribute to the men and women that have lost their lives protecting our freedoms. The names of 19 local heroes will be read out loud along with photos, followed by a moment of silence and a 3 volley salute. Following the tribute Dixieland will premier our all new pyro musical fireworks spectacular, “Celebrate!”.
On Memorial Day, Dixieland general admission is only $10.00 for unlimited rides. Admission is free after 8:45pm for those that want to come be a part of the tribute and see the fireworks. Parking is $5.00.
Dixieland will be open Weekends until May 30. Dixieland opens 5 days a week (Thursday to Monday) from May 31 to August 8th. The park will reopen Sat Aug 14 for weekend operation through Oct 31.

Time to Talk Turkey
Turkey hunters across the state are practicing their yelps and clucks in preparation for the upcoming turkey season. Opening day is Sat., Mar. 20 and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division anticipates that the 2010 season should be good, and harvest levels should be similar in comparison to the past several years.
“There should be many vocal 2-year old gobblers available for harvest this year thanks to the high reproduction rate in the summer of 2008,” says Kevin Lowrey, Wildlife Resources Division wild turkey project coordinator.
Statistics from the 2009 season harvest summary indicate that an estimated 56,113 resident Georgia hunters bagged 27,323 turkeys last year. The bird to hunter ratio (harvest rate) for 2009 was .49 birds per hunter – the same as in 2007 and 2008.
According to Lowrey, Georgia’s current turkey population is estimated at 300,000 birds.
Georgia turkey hunters are privileged with one of the longest turkey seasons nationwide. With a bag limit of three gobblers per season, hunters have from Mar. 20through May 15 to harvest their bird(s). Because most hunters pursue wild turkeys on private lands, the Wildlife Resources Division reminds hunters to always obtain landowner permission before hunting.
WMA Hunting Opportunities
Georgia’s Wildlife Management Areas offer excellent turkey hunting opportunities. Through the WMA system, resident hunters have access to nearly one million acres of prime hunting land for just $19 a year. Success rates and total harvest numbers from 2009 may help indicate which WMAs hunters should target this year.
In the northwest, Crockford-Pigeon Mountain and Berry College WMA reported the highest harvest rates. In the northeast, Dukes Creek WMA and Wilson Shoals WMA had the highest harvest rates. In west central Georgia, hunters should try Joe Kurz WMA and Rum Creek WMA. In east central Georgia, Di-Lane Plantation WMA and Tuckahoe WMA reported high harvest rates. In the southeast, hunters should visit Dixon Memorial WMA and Sansavilla WMA. Middle Georgia hunter should try River Bend WMA Finally, in southwest Georgia, River Creek WMA and Chickasawhatchee WMA had the highest harvest rates.
A special WMA license is required for any person 16 years or older who does not possess a valid honorary, sportsman or lifetime license when hunting wild turkey on a WMA, Public Fishing Area or State Park. In addition, both a valid hunting license and a big game license are required to legally hunt wild turkey. Wild turkey legally can be hunted with shotguns, loaded with No. 2 or smaller shot, any muzzleloading firearm, longbow, crossbow or compound bow.
Conservation of the Wild Turkey in Georgia
The comeback of the wild turkey is one of Georgia’s great conservation success stories. Although the bird population currently hovers around 300,000 statewide, as recently as 1973, the wild turkey population was as low as 17,000. Intensive restoration efforts, such as the restocking of wild birds and increased emphasis on biologically sound hunting seasons, have helped re-establish turkeys in suitable habitat in every county. This resurgence is due to the efforts of private landowners, hunters and conservation organizations like the National Wild Turkey Federation.
The Georgia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation has donated more than $3,220,977 since 1985 on projects that benefit wild turkey and other wildlife. The NWTF works cooperatively in partnership with the Wildlife Resources Division and other land management agencies with the focus on habitat enhancement, hunter access, wild turkey research and education. There currently are 96 state chapters of the NWTF with membership totals of more than 16,000.

Georgia National Fair Rides the Weather Roller Coaster Into One of Its 'Best' Years
The Georgia Agricultural Exposition Authority and staff say "thank you" to the 416,709 Fairgoers who attended the 20th anniversary Georgia National Fair. Despite the weather roller coaster, Fairgoers continued to show their support for and celebrate "20 Years of Georgia's Best."The 2008 attendance was 407,136.
"The Fair was an extremely satisfying fourth quarter win with time running out," said Ransom Moore, executive director. "It was very satisfying for the entire staff to see the fruits of their labor rewarded with an increase of nearly 10,000 Fair patrons over last year."
The Georgia National Fair was proud to introduce its new Livestock Equine Arena which was used for the first time by Georgia's 4-H and FFA students showing heifers, steers, market swine, breeding gilts, breeding ewes, sheep, commercial dairy heifers, market lambs, and market goats.
"The new show arena was an endorsement of the state's commitment to youth agricultural programs," Moore said. "These junior livestock shows are one of the major reasons the Fairgrounds was built. We are thrilled to host these shows, plus competitions and/or rallies for TSA, FCCLA, and FBLA."
The increase in Fair attendance also was welcome news for the Reithoffer Shows (midway rides), food concessionaires, commercial vendors, and sponsors. Many reported record sales and were pleased with Georgia's Fairgoers. Several vendors and sponsors are anxious to renew their contracts for 2010.
"The Georgia National Fair's phenomenal success is due to the families and their friends who attend the Fair and participate in its many events," Moore said.
The Fair set four days of record attendance: October 8 (up 75 percent), October 9 (17 percent), October 13 (30 percent) and October 18 (11 percent).
The Fair staff looks forward to seeing everyone for the 21st Georgia National Fair, October 7-17, 2010.
The Georgia National Fair has been designated a "Top 50 Fair" by Amusement Business magazine and www.carnivalwarehouse.com. Since its beginning in 1990, the Georgia National Fair has won 81 awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions for its livestock and horse events, competitive exhibits, and communications programs. The Fair has been designated a Southeast Tourism Society "Top 20 Event for October" 12 times (1991, 1996, 1997, 2000-2007, 2009). Main Street Theatre presents “The Haunted Theater on Hill Street” Thursday, October 29th at 8PM; Friday, October 30th at 7:30PM and Halloween evening, Saturday, October 31st at 7:30PM.
It’s Halloween weekend, 2009. The audience has gone home. The theater is dark. No lights are on. The curtain is drawn. Total silence. Very ominous.
But in this darkness, something is very strange. An aura still lingers in the place. Is it on small stage? In the back rows? Backstage?

Historic Grill Holding Chili Cook-Off Contest on Grantville Day
Several months ago a new restaurant called The Historic Grill opened in Grantville on Church Street in a building which originally housed one of Grantville's banks. In fact you can still see the bank's vault as soon as you walk in the door. The Historic Grill has announced that they will be sponsoring a Chili Cook-Off Contest on Grantville Day. The recipe of the contest winner will be featured in the Historic Grill menu. The tasting for the contest will take place at 5:00 PM on Grantville Day, which is Saturday September 26. The chili must be turned in no later tlhan 4:30 PM on Grantville Day. Anyone wishing to participate in this contest must sign up at the Historic Grill no later than Friday September 25.

Annual Scarecrow Contest at The Rock Ranch
There’s nothing more fun in the fall than making scarecrows. That’s why The Rock Ranch is hosting its second annual “Scarecrow Contest” for Fall Family Fun Days 2009.
Scarecrows can be made individually or in teams and a team can consist of almost anyone – co-workers, friends, family, church family and classmates. The primary consideration is to be creative.
Awards will include cash, trophies and other prizes in categories that include “Best All Around,” “Most Creative,” “Best Celebrity Look-a-Like Scarecrow,” “Most Professional Scarecrow” (dressed like a particular profession or occupation, and “Cutest Scarecrow.
The contest will be held Oct. 10, but all scarecrows must be delivered to The Rock Ranch prior to 5 p.m. on Oct. 8. The name, organization and e-mail should be included on a tag attached to the scarecrow.
October 10 is also Fall Family Fun Days’ “Wagon Wheel Market Day/Arts and Crafts Festival.” The fun begins at 10 a.m. and continues through 10 p.m.

WSB-TV to Feature Oak Hill, Berry College on Georgia's Hidden Treasures
Oak Hill and The Martha Berry Museum will join Berry College as featured attractions on the next edition of Georgia’s Hidden Treasures, a television special airing at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, on WSB-TV, the ABC affiliate in Atlanta.

Blue Morpho Month at Callaway Gardens' Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center
Butterfly Lovers Unite to Celebrate this Beautiful Blue Butterfly
September is Blue Morpho Butterfly Month at Callaway Gardens’ Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center. In addition to the more than 1,000 tropical butterflies flying freely throughout the conservatory, there will be hundreds of spectacular Blue Morpho butterflies.
The Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides) is a spectacular iridescent blue butterfly native to the rainforests of South and Central America. The undersides of the wings are brown with eyespots with a contrasting vivid blue color on the outer side. This iridescent color actually results from microscopic scales on the backs of their wings reflecting light, giving the brilliant shimmering blue appearance. As a Blue Morpho flies, its contrasting wing colors of bright blue and dull brown fool the eye and make the morpho look as if it is appearing and disappearing. The word ‘morpho’ actually means change or modify. The flash of the bright blue side of their wings actually startles predators, giving the butterfly time to escape harm. This tropical butterfly is usually a forest dweller but will venture into sunny areas occasionally. It is one of the largest butterflies with a wingspan of 5-8 inches.
Since they feed on juices of rotting fruit, they are usually easy to find in the Day Butterfly Center at the fruit feeders. Blue Morphos often fly in long chains of five or more to make a spectacular sight. Be sure to visit the Day Butterfly Center this month to view these magnificent creatures.
Due to the large size of the Blue Morphos, they make beautiful subjects as they float through the air for photos or video. The best time to photograph butterflies at the Day Butterfly Center is on sunny days before 10:00 a.m. or after 2:00 p.m. is on sunny days as they are most active between these hours.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at Clayton State University
Hispanic Heritage Month is the period to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States and to celebrate Hispanic heritage and culture. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on Sept. 15 and ending Oct. 15. The Sept. 15 date was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.
Clayton State University’s Hispanic Heritage Month events are sponsored by: the Department of Campus Life; DEEP (Diversity Educational Experiences for Peers) Peer Educators; the Campus Events Council (CEC); the Hispanic Student Association (HSA).

Super Heroes Converge on Zoo Atlanta
Meet Spider-Man™ and friends Labor Day Weekend
Even Super Heroes need a day at the Zoo. Spider-Man™, Wolverine™, Storm™ and Green Goblin™ combine their considerable powers during Super Heroes Weekend at Zoo Atlanta, September 5, 6 and 7. The classic Marvel Comics™ characters star in six performances of Operation Green™, a dynamic live-action show pitting Spider-Man and his cohorts against the dastardly Green Goblin in the fight to stop pollution and rescue the environment. Following each show, members of the audience will have an exclusive chance to meet the Super Heroes for photo opportunities and autographs.
Super Heroes Weekend also gives Zoo Atlanta an opportunity to showcase its own hero status as a champion of wildlife and conservation, with fun activities introducing young people to lifelong patterns of stewardship that begin at home in their own backyards. Opportunities will include face painting; storytelling with favorite costume characters; Super Hero crafts; games; keeper talks; and special animal encounters.
Tickets are $10 for Zoo Atlanta Members and children under 3; $24.99 for non-Member adults ages 12 and up; $20.99 for non-Member children ages 3 to 11. Children under 3 are $10. Infants under the age of 1 may sit in a parent’s lap and do not require a ticket. Tickets include admission to Operation Green, character meet-and-greet and all other Super Heroes Weekend activities. UGA Field Day Aug. 19 at Midville, Ga., Farm
To showcase research and its importance to the agricultural industry in its region, the University of Georgia Southeast Research and Education Center in Midville, Ga., will have a field day Aug. 19.
Participants will see the latest work by UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences experts on twin-row soybeans, fungicide trials, insect control and official state variety trials for corn, soybean and peanut, said Anthony Black, the center’s superintendent.
Work at the Burke County center was postponed six years ago due to budget cuts. The center reopened last summer.
“Things have really picked up since the reopening,” Black said. “We have begun a new renewable energy program that focuses on the production of biofuel feedstock crops. I would say we are about up to full speed, and irrigated research land is about full capacity.”
The day starts at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. To find out more, call (706) 542-1060.
