The Pink Pig is an Atlanta tradition that is more than 50 years old. From its 1953 debut as a children’s ride at the downtown Rich’s store, to its brief stint at the Egleston Children’s Hospital Festival of Trees, five generations of Atlantans have ridden the Pink Pig into the holiday season!
Priscilla – the original Pink Pig – began as a monorail along the ceiling of Rich’s, giving children the experience of “flying over” the toy department. Later, another pig – Percival – was added and they became known as the Pink Pig monorail twins. Years later, the monorail was relocated to the roof of the department store and the “monorail twins” took passengers on rooftop rides viewing downtown Atlanta and circling the Great Tree.
In 2003, Priscilla, the Pink Pig was re-introduced to a new generation of Atlantans. Since then, she has been back on track underneath a giant Pink Pig Tent at the Lenox Square Mall upper-level parking deck near Macy’s. Atlanta’s most “pink-tacular” train ride travels along train tracks to carry children and parents through a life-sized storybook that includes the original Pink Pig and other holiday friends. Once again, a portion of the proceeds from each ride will benefit the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. To date, Macy’s has donated more than $335,000 to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

- This year’s houses, GARGOYLE and DEAD SALVAGE, are longer than 4 football fields!
- Co-owners and movie and TV professionals, Ben Armstrong and Billy Messina, have been in the haunt industry for a combined 40 years and are two of the founding members of The Haunted House Association and the International Association of Haunted Attractions.
- It takes an entire year to conceptualize and create the following year’s houses, thanks to a small but talented and dedicated staff.
- 100’s of visitors get so scared going through the haunt that they have to exit before the haunts are done. And that includes grown men!
- The Walking Dead, Zombieland and Halloween 2 are a few of the Hollywood films and television shows that featured Netherworld Haunted House costumes, props, sets, actors and special effects make-up artists.
- On average, more than 50,000 fright-worshipping patrons visit from 48 states each year!
- More than 200 special effects attack the senses of visitors in both GARGOYLE and DEAD SALVAGE, including the rail-gripping, vertigo-inducing 40-foot Spinning Tunnel.
- 100 monsters scour the parking lot outside of Netherworld and inside the houses on any given night in search of new flesh. These lucky and talented actors were selected from a pool of more than 1,000 applicants this year alone!
- 4 days until Halloween, means only 7 more chances to scream your way through GARGOYLE and DEAD SALVAGE. Netherworld Haunted House is open nightly the rest of October as well as Friday, November 5 and Saturday, November 6.
- 1 is the ranking Netherworld Haunted House has received from USA Today, HauntWorld.com and Fangoria.com…and may receive from ABC’s Good Morning America’s “America’s Spookiest Place” news poll. This ranking is up to you, so vote for your favorite here: www.abcnews.com/halloween, and GMA’s hosts will broadcast live from the winning haunt Halloween morning!

The Holiday Ice Spectacular Shares the Spirit of the Season this December
Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Transforms Into Icy Wonderland
This winter, you’re invited to a seasonal show-stopper like no other with world-class skaters and entertainers setting the ice on fire at The Holiday Ice Spectacular. Join the colorful cast as they create a glittering world of holiday cheer December 16-24 and let the quick-witted humor and dazzling performances captivate as these outstanding athletes take to the ice-covered stage at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.
Henry, a charming, yet mischievous elf has decided (against orders) to let the audience experience the wonder of the North Pole. He and his wife will keep you roaring in your seats with their adult-friendly comic relief peppered throughout the show. You’ll see everything from a Hannukah celebration to an intricate line dance performed on skates. Humorous vignettes, a 12-minute bite of The Nutcracker and flawless skating filled with awe-inspiring catches and gravity-defying leaps will keep you entranced throughout the entire production.
“It’s exciting to be back home in Atlanta producing The Holiday Ice Spectacular during the most festive and reflective time of year,” says Jeb K. Rand, creator of The Holiday Ice Spectacular. “It was our goal to create a holiday revue that will redefine year-end traditions for years to come, and I believe our audiences will agree that we’ve done just that.”
The Holiday Ice Spectacular is the perfect way to spend a night out with your family, friends, or coworkers, and is just right for a delightfully surprising date. Tickets range in price from $25 to $89 and are available via Ticketmaster, www.ticketmaster.com. Special VIP and group packages are also offered at select prices and discount levels. Want to spend a night out while giving back to two of Atlanta’s favorite non-profit organizations? Stay tuned for details about how your ticket purchase could give back.
Developed by Rand Family Entertainment, The Holiday Ice Spectacular is produced and directed by Cobb County native Jeb K. Rand, whose entertainment career began when he was just a small child with a passion for skating. A former nationally-ranked U.S. pairs figure skater, Jeb’s professional skating career spanned over a decade and included principal roles with Ice Capades, Disney on Ice, and Stars on Ice – Italian Tour. He and his wife and skating partner, Jen, were also featured in Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular from 1998 through 2005. His love for creating magical stories and shows that transform the stage provides the perfect segue into his current creative role as the President and Executive Producer of Rand Enterprises & Productions Inc., where he now serves as the creative force behind productions taking place around the world.
Showtimes: The Holiday Ice Spectacular will open December 16. Shows will run though December 23 with select matinee performances, including one on December 24. For more information or a detailed list of show times, please visit www.holidayicespectacular.com.

26th Running of the Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens®
A Fun-Filled Day of Tailgating and Horse Racing Benefits the Arts
Horses will take center stage at Callaway Gardens® once again for the thrills, chills and thoroughbred majesty of one of the world’s oldest and most exciting sports – steeplechasing. Set for Saturday, November 6, The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens is one of 36 stops on a 12-state tour that includes some of the country’s finest tracks and top steeplechase jockeys.
One of the Nation’s Top Steeplechase Events
Steeplechasing, which primarily features horses converted from flat racing, allows spectators to see these horses at their athletic best as they jump over 52” high hurdles at premium speeds.
The 2 3/8-mile course at Callaway Gardens long has been considered one of the most beautiful steeplechase sites in the United States. The 200-acre site is cradled in hardwoods and statuesque Georgia pines with rolling hills overlooking Pine Mountain Ridge. The scenery is punctuated with striking colors of the changing leaves. It is a wonderful setting for a day in the country. A 20’ x 27’ video screen allows Terrace and Guarantor patrons to follow the action all the way around the track, including the start, back stretch and finish.
The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens includes six main races with a total purse of $160,000. These races are the W.C. Bradley Maiden Timber; The Collie Jennings Mullin Amateur Hurdle sponsored by CB&T; AFLAC Championship Supreme Hurdle; Crown Royal Sport of Queens Stakes; Suntrust Highweight Hurdle; and the Skanska Flat Race. Prior to the main race action, the event features the Maxine Strupe Perpetual Pony Race and the V’roooom Technology Inc. Junior Hunter Race.
Once again this year, the fun will extend beyond the track with a series of family activities and special events. The Infield will come alive throughout the day with entertainment ranging from annual Jack Russell Terrier races to stick pony races permitting children to dash down the track to claim prizes while experiencing the thrill of the ‘chase.’ In addition, there will be a hat contest and tailgate competition both with a variety of categories. Also for children is a Kids Corral providing many fun activities for children under the age of 10 such as inflatable slides, popcorn and cotton candy. Kids Corral wristbands are only $20.
New for the 2010 Steeplechase
The 2010 race director is Kate McGrory. New to Columbus several years ago, McGrory is an avid horsewoman who for the past three years has volunteered with the Steeplechase serving in Race Operations and hospitality for Owners and Trainers.
McGrory introduces a new venue combining two southern traditions, barbeque and college football, in one large tent. For $25 patrons can enjoy an upscale BBQ lunch while keeping up with football games and scores broadcast on large-screen TVs. Complimentary beers and wines will be served. BBQ and Ballgames replaces Galloping Gourmets. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling the Steeplechase office at 760-324-6252. A limited number of tickets are available.
Also new this year is a designated area to “bring your own tent” at the Start on the Rail. Previously, individual tents were not permitted. However, the Steeplechase committee decided to test this idea suggested by a patron. Reserve the space, which includes six tickets and one parking pass, and drive your car right up to the spot and unload your own tent, chairs and picnic.
Supporting the Arts
The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens is more than a day at the races. Race Chairman Mason Lampton was the visionary who combined his love of steeplechasing with the community’s needs. “Our mission has always been to financially support the arts in our community using the Steeplechase as a vehicle to do so,” said Lampton. “This has proven to be a positive experience for everyone, both by adding a sporting event which is entertaining for all ages and so far has allowed us to contribute a total of $2.7 million to the arts in this region.” Beneficiaries include The Columbus Museum, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, The Historic Columbus Foundation, The Ida Cason Callaway Foundation and The Springer Opera House. An additional partnership with Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine is made possible through the proceeds.
Infield tickets are $25 per person. Box seats range from $325 for six to $500 for six. Tent packages begin at $800 for six and are available for entertaining larger families or corporate guests. Reserved Rail Packages in the Infield are $270 for six. Tickets can be purchased online at www.steeplechaseatcallaway.org; by calling 706-324-6252; and at the front desks of Callaway Gardens’ Lodge and Spa and Mountain Creek Inn beginning Saturday, October 9th. Same-day tickets will be available at the gate on Nelson Road off of Ga. Hwy. 18.
The easiest way to enjoy Steeplechase is to stay at one of Callaway Gardens’ many choices of accommodations. A variety of Steeplechase overnight packages are available that include tickets to Steeplechase, overnight accommodations, a Saturday breakfast, a Sunday champagne brunch, admission to Callaway Gardens and use of a fitness center. To reserve your overnight package, visit www.callawaygardens.com or call 1-800-CALLAWAY (225-5292).
The entrance to Steeplechase is begins at the intersection of Ga. Hwy. 18 and Nelson Road. Gates open at 10 a.m. Entertainment in the infield begins at 10:30 a.m. and Post Time is 12 p.m. A race day schedule is available online.

13th Annual Great Georgia Air Show Oct 9 - 10 in Peachtree City
You can just feel the excitement in the air at Falcon Field in Peachtree City.
And on October 9 and 10, you will be able to see it…
The countdown has begun, and the 13th Annual Great Georgia Air Show (GGAS) is ready for take-off.
And with a line-up of events featuring gravity-defying jets, thundering jet trucks, vintage warbirds and a one-of-a-kind wingwalking performance organizers are bracing for what could be the “most exciting show yet.”
Adding to the excitement, this year’s show -- produced by the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree City and the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), Dixie Wing -- will feature military aircraft, civilian aerobatics, historic warbirds performing the Battle of Midway and a number of ground activities for both days.
Back by popular demand is three-time National Champion Gene Soucy, as he tears up the sky in the ShowCat with his combination of smoke, noise and elegance in the air.
The crowd favorite features wingwalker Teresa Stokes, as she climbs onto the wings of the ShowCat, piloted by Soucy, for her wild ride on a wing. And if you are lucky, you’ll even catch a glimpse of a headstand in the sky.
And, of course, no show is complete until Gene demonstrates his one-wheel landing.
The air show will host Team Chaos Extreme Airshows -- a thrill-a-minute dog fight between two aircraft and a jet truck-- as well as static modern military aircraft and the thrills and chills of some of the best in the business when it comes to civilian aerobatics. And you don’t want to miss the ever popular Flash Fire Jet Truck, Gary Ward and the MX2, BearFeat Acrobatics and our very own local magic in the air Red Eagle Airsports.
Check the air show web site frequently for updates on newly added performing teams.
The CAF Dixie Wing will showcase its growing collection of vintage World War II and Korean War-era aircraft. The organization, based in Peachtree City, is the Georgia chapter of the Commemorative Air Force, an international non-profit dedicated to restoring and flying vintage American military aircraft. Rides will be available for purchase in the CAF Dixie Wing, SBD Dauntless, LT-6 Mosquito and C-45 Expeditor.
Once again, the military will reinforce American dominance in the skies with appearances by F-15s, F-16s, F-18s and the C-130.
And, if it doesn’t get any better than this, one of the pilots is home-grown Lt. Col. Alexander G. Haldopoulus, a 1988 graduate of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City.
Spectators will be able to get close up and personal with static military aircraft on the ground as well.
Scott Slade of WSB Talk Radio will serve as the air show announcer for the 13th consecutive year.
As always, this year’s The Great Georgia Airshow will be more than an air show. There will also be a lot of fun on the grounds of Falcon Field. The show provides a venue for educational displays and kids activities throughout the weekend.
Numerous vendors will be selling arts, crafts, souvenirs, and food.
Proceeds from the show will benefit local non-profit organizations, including school groups and scouting.
The Corporate Chalet area is available for sponsors who wish to enjoy a unique experience at the show while entertaining clients and employees or friends and relatives.
For information about sponsorship please contact Janet Smola, Marketing Director at 770-639-9169 or janetsmola@comcast.net Packages are available at all levels of sponsorship.
Advance tickets can be purchased at Kroger stores until midnight October 8. Advance tickets are discounted and sell for; Adults $15, Children, ages 6-12, $5. Kids ages 5 and under get in free. After October 8th, tickets are also available at the gate; Adults $18, Children, ages 6-12, $7. Gates open at 9 a.m. both days, with aerial performances from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. To better ensure security and safety absolutely no coolers, backpacks, or pets.
