26th Running of the Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens®

A Fun-Filled Day of Tailgating and Horse Racing Benefits the Arts

Horses will take center stage at Callaway Gardens® once again for the thrills, chills and thoroughbred majesty of one of the world’s oldest and most exciting sports – steeplechasing. Set for Saturday, November 6, The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens is one of 36 stops on a 12-state tour that includes some of the country’s finest tracks and top steeplechase jockeys.

One of the Nation’s Top Steeplechase Events

Steeplechasing, which primarily features horses converted from flat racing, allows spectators to see these horses at their athletic best as they jump over 52” high hurdles at premium speeds.

The 2 3/8-mile course at Callaway Gardens long has been considered one of the most beautiful steeplechase sites in the United States. The 200-acre site is cradled in hardwoods and statuesque Georgia pines with rolling hills overlooking Pine Mountain Ridge. The scenery is punctuated with striking colors of the changing leaves. It is a wonderful setting for a day in the country. A 20’ x 27’ video screen allows Terrace and Guarantor patrons to follow the action all the way around the track, including the start, back stretch and finish.

The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens includes six main races with a total purse of $160,000. These races are the W.C. Bradley Maiden Timber; The Collie Jennings Mullin Amateur Hurdle sponsored by CB&T; AFLAC Championship Supreme Hurdle; Crown Royal Sport of Queens Stakes; Suntrust Highweight Hurdle; and the Skanska Flat Race. Prior to the main race action, the event features the Maxine Strupe Perpetual Pony Race and the V’roooom Technology Inc. Junior Hunter Race.

Once again this year, the fun will extend beyond the track with a series of family activities and special events. The Infield will come alive throughout the day with entertainment ranging from annual Jack Russell Terrier races to stick pony races permitting children to dash down the track to claim prizes while experiencing the thrill of the ‘chase.’ In addition, there will be a hat contest and tailgate competition both with a variety of categories. Also for children is a Kids Corral providing many fun activities for children under the age of 10 such as inflatable slides, popcorn and cotton candy. Kids Corral wristbands are only $20.

New for the 2010 Steeplechase

The 2010 race director is Kate McGrory. New to Columbus several years ago, McGrory is an avid horsewoman who for the past three years has volunteered with the Steeplechase serving in Race Operations and hospitality for Owners and Trainers.

McGrory introduces a new venue combining two southern traditions, barbeque and college football, in one large tent. For $25 patrons can enjoy an upscale BBQ lunch while keeping up with football games and scores broadcast on large-screen TVs. Complimentary beers and wines will be served. BBQ and Ballgames replaces Galloping Gourmets. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling the Steeplechase office at 760-324-6252. A limited number of tickets are available.

Also new this year is a designated area to “bring your own tent” at the Start on the Rail. Previously, individual tents were not permitted. However, the Steeplechase committee decided to test this idea suggested by a patron. Reserve the space, which includes six tickets and one parking pass, and drive your car right up to the spot and unload your own tent, chairs and picnic.

Supporting the Arts

The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens is more than a day at the races. Race Chairman Mason Lampton was the visionary who combined his love of steeplechasing with the community’s needs. “Our mission has always been to financially support the arts in our community using the Steeplechase as a vehicle to do so,” said Lampton. “This has proven to be a positive experience for everyone, both by adding a sporting event which is entertaining for all ages and so far has allowed us to contribute a total of $2.7 million to the arts in this region.” Beneficiaries include The Columbus Museum, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, The Historic Columbus Foundation, The Ida Cason Callaway Foundation and The Springer Opera House. An additional partnership with Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine is made possible through the proceeds.

Infield tickets are $25 per person. Box seats range from $325 for six to $500 for six. Tent packages begin at $800 for six and are available for entertaining larger families or corporate guests. Reserved Rail Packages in the Infield are $270 for six. Tickets can be purchased online at www.steeplechaseatcallaway.org; by calling 706-324-6252; and at the front desks of Callaway Gardens’ Lodge and Spa and Mountain Creek Inn beginning Saturday, October 9th. Same-day tickets will be available at the gate on Nelson Road off of Ga. Hwy. 18.

The easiest way to enjoy Steeplechase is to stay at one of Callaway Gardens’ many choices of accommodations. A variety of Steeplechase overnight packages are available that include tickets to Steeplechase, overnight accommodations, a Saturday breakfast, a Sunday champagne brunch, admission to Callaway Gardens and use of a fitness center. To reserve your overnight package, visit www.callawaygardens.com or call 1-800-CALLAWAY (225-5292).

The entrance to Steeplechase is begins at the intersection of Ga. Hwy. 18 and Nelson Road. Gates open at 10 a.m. Entertainment in the infield begins at 10:30 a.m. and Post Time is 12 p.m. A race day schedule is available online.

For more information about The Steeplechase at Callaway Gardens, call 706-324-6252 or visit www.steeplechaseatcallaway.org.

13th Annual Great Georgia Air Show Oct 9 - 10 in Peachtree City

You can just feel the excitement in the air at Falcon Field in Peachtree City.

And on October 9 and 10, you will be able to see it…

The countdown has begun, and the 13th Annual Great Georgia Air Show (GGAS) is ready for take-off.

And with a line-up of events featuring gravity-defying jets, thundering jet trucks, vintage warbirds and a one-of-a-kind wingwalking performance organizers are bracing for what could be the “most exciting show yet.”

Adding to the excitement, this year’s show -- produced by the Kiwanis Club of Peachtree City and the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), Dixie Wing -- will feature military aircraft, civilian aerobatics, historic warbirds performing the Battle of Midway and a number of ground activities for both days.

Back by popular demand is three-time National Champion Gene Soucy, as he tears up the sky in the ShowCat with his combination of smoke, noise and elegance in the air.

The crowd favorite features wingwalker Teresa Stokes, as she climbs onto the wings of the ShowCat, piloted by Soucy, for her wild ride on a wing. And if you are lucky, you’ll even catch a glimpse of a headstand in the sky.

And, of course, no show is complete until Gene demonstrates his one-wheel landing.

The air show will host Team Chaos Extreme Airshows -- a thrill-a-minute dog fight between two aircraft and a jet truck-- as well as static modern military aircraft and the thrills and chills of some of the best in the business when it comes to civilian aerobatics. And you don’t want to miss the ever popular Flash Fire Jet Truck, Gary Ward and the MX2, BearFeat Acrobatics and our very own local magic in the air Red Eagle Airsports.

Check the air show web site frequently for updates on newly added performing teams.

The CAF Dixie Wing will showcase its growing collection of vintage World War II and Korean War-era aircraft. The organization, based in Peachtree City, is the Georgia chapter of the Commemorative Air Force, an international non-profit dedicated to restoring and flying vintage American military aircraft. Rides will be available for purchase in the CAF Dixie Wing, SBD Dauntless, LT-6 Mosquito and C-45 Expeditor.

Once again, the military will reinforce American dominance in the skies with appearances by F-15s, F-16s, F-18s and the C-130.

And, if it doesn’t get any better than this, one of the pilots is home-grown Lt. Col. Alexander G. Haldopoulus, a 1988 graduate of McIntosh High School in Peachtree City.

Spectators will be able to get close up and personal with static military aircraft on the ground as well.

Scott Slade of WSB Talk Radio will serve as the air show announcer for the 13th consecutive year.

As always, this year’s The Great Georgia Airshow will be more than an air show. There will also be a lot of fun on the grounds of Falcon Field. The show provides a venue for educational displays and kids activities throughout the weekend.

Numerous vendors will be selling arts, crafts, souvenirs, and food.

Proceeds from the show will benefit local non-profit organizations, including school groups and scouting.

The Corporate Chalet area is available for sponsors who wish to enjoy a unique experience at the show while entertaining clients and employees or friends and relatives.

For information about sponsorship please contact Janet Smola, Marketing Director at 770-639-9169 or janetsmola@comcast.net Packages are available at all levels of sponsorship.

Advance tickets can be purchased at Kroger stores until midnight October 8. Advance tickets are discounted and sell for; Adults $15, Children, ages 6-12, $5. Kids ages 5 and under get in free. After October 8th, tickets are also available at the gate; Adults $18, Children, ages 6-12, $7. Gates open at 9 a.m. both days, with aerial performances from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. To better ensure security and safety absolutely no coolers, backpacks, or pets.

Tickets Still Available for JAZZOO 2010

Wildest night of the year includes cocktails, food, music and fun fashions

Tickets are still available for JAZZOO 2010, this Saturday, September 25 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Zoo Atlanta. The event will feature kiosks from more than 30 of Atlanta’s best restaurants, specialty cocktails at full-service open bars, and animal viewing until dusk. Live entertainment will include music from 80s cover band The Breakfast Club; Eddie’s Attic Acoustic Stage; MudCat; Sound Investment; and Andrew Brothers Dueling Pianos.

New for 2010 is the opportunity to view and vote on fashions evoked by Zoo Atlanta animals, created by designers from the world’s most comprehensive art and design university. During spring quarter 2010, students from SCAD’s Introduction to Fashion Classes were instructed to design 3-D garments inspired by animals at the Zoo. The students visited the Zoo where they photographed and observed the animals in their habitat. Using unconventional materials, the garments that will be featured at JAZZOO were designed using a variety of materials: balloons, feathers, rope, coffee filters, paper maché, and aluminum cans. This project is a great example of how SCAD students are able to master design challenges in the most creative and fascinating ways.

JAZZOO is an event where whimsical, animal-inspired attire is the norm, with extra encouragement this year: the wearer of the best “creative cocktail” costume will win a cruise for two. SIXTHMAN has donated a room on THE ROCK BOAT cruise (Carnival Inspiration) hosted by Sister Hazel.

Proceeds of JAZZOO 2010 will support Zoo Atlanta’s access programs that provide admission and field trips to disadvantaged children and schools. All-inclusive tickets are available now on jazzooatlanta.org.

Family and Youth Groups Heart of Agri-tainment Business for Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze

Puzzle Solving in Maze and Climbing Goats Provide New Autumn Entertainment

Making the shift from corporate America to “cornfield America” was a decision Georgia resident Mike Pinzl made in 2002 to spend more time with his family. As the ninth season commences in Dawson County, Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch has grown from 12,000 visitors in that first year to more than 40,000 visitors each fall. A large percent of business in September is attributable to group outings to the maze, such as Boy Scouts of America, church groups and special youth outings such as Foster Family Day.

Pinzl attributes the appeal of this annual fall pilgrimage to his 20-acre complex along the Etowah River to plain old family fun. “We offer a safe, clean and fun environment, and we are pleased to built a strong reputation and brand for the name Uncle Shuck’s,” said Mike Pinzl, known as “Uncle Shuck”, who is an active member of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, Dawson County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the North American Farmers Direct Marketing Association.

“We support the chambers and do a fundraiser for the Dawson County High School and the Forsyth Explorers with our annual haunted maze. This year my wife Roxanne and I felt we could do something more for families in the community, especially for young people who need a loving place to call home. We added a Foster Family Day in September," Pinzl added.

Families who support foster children in Dawson, Forsyth, Hall, Lumpkin and White counties were invited to a complimentary evening at the maze on Saturday, September 11. There were 85 people who took part in this inaugural event, who were treated to a hayride, maze passes and allowed to feed the goats in the Great Goat Trek area. “My family had a great time. This was our first Corn Maze experience and it was a blast. We loved playing Farm Scene Investigation,” said one of the foster family parents.

Scout weekends attract 2,500 boys and girls over two weekends during the official start of autumn. Boy Scout Weekend will be Sept 25-26 and Girl Scout Weekend follows on Oct 2-3. All children who are part of Scout Weekends, or come in scout uniforms on other days, receive a combo ticket (maze and hay ride), a special Uncle Shuck’s patch, and access to a special demonstration by Smithgall Woods Education Center (11am to 4pm each day). The cost is $11 per scout. A November “Cousin Dozen” special is being promoted with Georgia’s official tourism web site, www.exploregeorgia.org.

The main attraction for all groups is still the 12-acre maze, which has two separate pathways cut through the living cornstalks form the intricate scales and veins of a giant Monarch butterfly. This season, visitors can not only “have fun getting lost”, but special maps provide clues in a “whodunit” game called Farm Scene Investigation. The game card is provided with admission for a new twist in the maze. On the festival grounds a new attraction for 2010 is the Great Goat Trek. A small herd of the nimble farm animals will climb along narrow walkways and a series of five platforms, ranging from three feet to 15 feet above the ground. Visitors can reward the goats by delivering special feed to the highest platform with a hand-held food delivery system. According to Pinzl, goats are natural climbers.

The Pumpkin Patch opens October 1, with gourds and pumpkins priced individually for customers. Also in October is the popular Haunted Maze, a separate one-mile path that opens after dusk as the “Husks of Horror”. The Haunted Maze will operate every Friday and Saturday night (dusk to 10 p.m.) in October, as well as a special Sunday, Oct 10 “Haunt Night”. The Haunted Maze is $12 per person, or $15 as a combo ticket, which is a fundraiser for the Forsyth County Explorers.

Regular admission prices are $9 per person for the maze; maze admission is free for children 3 and under. There are additional activities at the agri-tourism complex, such as a tractor-drawn hay ride along the Etowah River, bonfire area and corn cannon; fees vary (hay ride with marshmallow toasting at the bonfire is $5 per person). A combo ticket for $12 includes admission to the maze, a hay ride and a bonfire pass. There is no admission fee for the Picnic Pavilion, Kiddie CORNer (soybean maze, hay bales) or photo area.

Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch is located only 40 minutes from metro Atlanta, just two miles west from the North Georgia Premium Outlet Mall on Georgia Highway 53. For more information, visit www.uncleshucks.com, or follow the progress of the maze on Facebook.

Released in 1973, “The Exorcist” caused a cultural earthquake that is still felt today, shocking and enthralling audiences who had never seen anything like it. Many viewers were frightened out of their wits – and literally out of their seats. Some ran out of the theater; others got physically ill or couldn’t sleep for weeks. Now audiences may experience the same visceral emotions again in their local movie theater with this masterpiece of suspense that haunted, intrigued and thrilled the world.

Adapted from the best-selling 1971 novel inspired by an actual exorcism case, “The Exorcist” tells the now-famous story of a young girl’s demonic possession, and her mother’s (Ellen Burstyn) desperate attempts to save her. Blair, in a breakout role, plays the possessed Regan, caught in a gripping fight between good and evil which culminated with an exorcism conducted by two priests. Terrifying audiences and chilling them to the bone, the theological thriller also starred Max von Sydow, Kitty Winn, Lee J. Cobb, Jason Miller and Mercedes McCambridge. “The Exorcist” is still considered one of the most successful feature films of all time, grossing $440 million worldwide and earning 10 Academy Award® nominations (winning Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound).

“The cultural impact of this truly frightening thriller cannot be understated and to experience it in movie theaters on giant, 40-foot screens is amazing,” said Dan Diamond, vice president of NCM Fathom. “With the stunning quality of this special event, fans will be on the edge of their seats like never before.”

Presented by NCM Fathom and Warner Home Video, in association with CHUD.com, The Exorcist Extended Director’s Cut will appear in 457 select U.S. movie theaters, including AMC Entertainment Inc., Celebration! Cinema, Cinemark Holdings, Inc., Clearview Cinemas, Cobb Theatres, Kerasotes Showplace Theatres, National Amusements, Rave Motion Pictures and Regal Entertainment Group movie theaters, as well as Arlington Theatre (Santa Barbara, CA), The Carolina (Asheville, NC), The Majestic 10 (Williston, VT) and Penn Cinema (Lititz, PA).

“The Exorcist” will be available from Warner Home Video on Blu-ray in a two-disc, high-definition set featuring both the original theatrical version and Extended Director’s Cut of the film plus three new documentaries on October 5. For more information, visit www.warnerhomevideo.com.

Center Partners with GSU and Atlantic Station for Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive

The Center for Puppetry Arts is teaming up with their neighbors in Atlantic Station and the Georgia State University College of Education Alumni Club to sponsor a Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood Sweater Drive! In conjunction with the drive, the Center will host a very special evening with actor David Newell on Friday, September 10 from 8-9:00 p.m. as he takes a look back at his career as Speedy Delivery man Mr. McFeely on Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. In his special presentation, Mr. McFeely Remembers: A Tribute to Fred Rogers, Newell will share images, video clips (including bloopers!), and personal memories of working with the show’s host and lead puppeteer Fred Rogers for over thirty years. At the end of the evening, fans will have a chance to take a picture with Newell, in character as Mr. McFeely.

During the Sweater Drive, members of the community are asked to donate new or gently worn children’s sweaters to benefit the Children’s Restoration Network, which supports homeless children in shelters and group homes. Mr. Rogers’-inspired sweater collection boxes will be located at the Georgia State University College of Education building from August 5 through September 10th and at the Center for Puppetry Arts from September 10 through the end of the month. Sweater donations can also be made at the Atlantic Station Artist’s Market on September 11 and 18 between 11am and 3pm; those who donate a sweater at this location will not only be helping out a child in need, they’ll also receive discount coupons from Atlantic Station retailers as well as a coupon to come see a show at the Center!

“This is such a fitting tribute to Fred Rogers and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” said Park Cofield, Audience Development Manager at the Center for Puppetry Arts. “Given Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood’s close tie with puppetry, we are so pleased to be a part of this initiative and to be working with our neighbors in Atlantic Station and the Georgia State University College of Education Alumni Club. It’s a wonderful opportunity to embrace our community and give back to the children in our area who are in need.”

Fred Rogers may have described the neighborly spirit associated with the sweater drive best: “All of us, at some time or other, need help,” Rogers said, “and whether we’re giving or receiving a sweater, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That’s one of the things that connects us as neighbors – in our own way everyone is a giver and a receiver.”

ABOUT MR. ROGERS’ NEIGHBORHOOD:

There’s a warm, home-spun quality about Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, not just in Fred Rogers’ welcoming manner, but in the closet full of sweaters on the cozy living room set, a fashion statement that has come to mean, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” Each of Fred Rogers’ legendary sweaters was knitted by his mother, Nancy McFeely Rogers, who would knit a dozen sweaters each year and give them to family and close friends at Christmas time. Fred Rogers decided to put on a sweater and change into sneakers as a way to set the tone for a comfortable visit and help children settle in for his half-hour program. One of his sweaters is now on display at the Smithsonian Institute.

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood continues to broadcast on PBS stations around the country, now holding the title of the longest running program on PBS. Beloved by children, parents, and educators, Fred Rogers’ unique approach to using television has been revolutionary in the industry. The pace of the neighborhood series, which gives viewers time to reflect and comprehend, is more important for today’s children than ever. As TV Guide stated, “TV is all about coveting, but Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood was about appreciating what you already have, about caring for others, and about seeing the best in them.”

Family Communications, Inc., the Pittsburgh, PA-based non-profit corporation, was founded in 1971 by Fred Rogers. The company continues to carry on his legacy through developing a wide range of materials for young children, their families, and the professionals who support them.
