This summer Natalie Merchant will embark on a nationwide tour in support of her new album Leave Your
Sleep. Beginning July 12 in Montclair, NJ, the tour will be Merchant’s first major outing in seven years. Merchant and her eight-piece band will perform new material as well as favorites from throughout her career.
Leave Your Sleep, out now on Nonesuch Records, has received critical acclaim with Entertainment Weekly praising its “gorgeous arrangements of dreamy chamber folk,” The Daily Beast calling it “soothing and electric,” and the BBC citing it’s “sheer ravishing beauty.” The dates follow a series of high profile appearances, including “Good Morning America,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and NPR’s “Morning Edition,” as well as a performance at the annual TED Conference in February.
Her first studio album since 2003’s The House Carpenter’s Daughter, Leave Your Sleep is the culmination of six years of research and collaboration and is, in Merchant’s words “The most elaborate project I have ever completed or even imagined.” A two-disc set, Leave Your Sleep is a collection of songs adapted from poems selected by Merchant including pieces by both well known and obscure writers. Featured are works by British Victorians, early- and mid-20th century Americans, and contemporary writers, as well as anonymous nursery rhymes and lullabies. Among the authors included are Ogden Nash, E.E. Cummings, Robert Louis Stevenson, Christina Rossetti, Edward Lear, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Robert Graves.
In addition to this new method of creating lyrics, Merchant also stretches out musically on Leave Your Sleep by collaborating with a broad spectrum of artists including the Wynton Marsalis Quartet, Medeski Martin & Wood, The Fairfield Four, The Chinese Music Ensemble of New York, the Ditty Bops, members of the New York Philharmonic, The Klezmatics, Lúnasa, and Hazmat Modine. The album was co-produced by Merchant with Andres Levin and engineered by Nick Wollage.
Merchant—who has sold millions of records worldwide over the course of her recording career—has remained busy in the time since her last studio album by curating compilations for both 10,000 Maniacs’ Campfire Songs and her own Retrospective. Additionally, Merchant performed live to the accompaniment of Philip Glass, Dr. John, Pete Seeger, and Wynton Marsalis, and collaborated with British composer Gavin Bryars as part of The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Complete Works series.

The evening will also feature a premium open bar with signature alcoholic and non-alcoholic specialty beverages, live entertainment and a number of surprises. A percent of the proceeds from The 2010 Atlanta Food Rave will go to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, which currently distributes nearly two million pounds of food and other grocery items each month to more than 700 non-profit agencies and 38 counties in the Atlanta area. National Train Day at Vines Gardens
All Aboard! Gwinnett County Parks & Recreation is proud to celebrate National Train Day at a free event at Vines Gardens in Loganville on Saturday, May 8, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Visitors will enjoy touring the beautiful gardens, gazebos, statuaries and oriental garden. Crafts, ice cream and hot dog will be available for kids to enjoy. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the grounds.
Volunteer engineers will be holding information sessions on trains and the model train hobby as well as demonstrating the outdoor garden railroad at the largest garden railroad in the Southeast on display at Vines Gardens. The Vines Garden Railroad features a “G” scale model railroad featuring over 1,000 feet of track, 25 foot suspension bridge, tunnels and viaduct, airport, towns and villages. To the delight of preschoolers, a “G” scale Thomas the Train will be running all day!

Eighth Annual Summer Shade Festival Celebrates Food, Art, Music & Fun in Historic Grant Park
For the eighth year, the Grant Park Conservancy welcomes thousands of guests to a weekend of fun for the entire family. The Summer Shade Festival features two Artist Markets, live music performances on three stages, tasty treats and beautiful late summer weather. Younger attendees will enjoy the Family Fun Zone, an area offering hands-on craft projects and kid-friendly entertainment like storytellers and puppet shows.
Each year the festival also welcomes its tasting extravaganza Corks & Forks: A Fine Food and Wine Event, which includes dishes from many of the city’s top chefs paired with wines and beers from around the world. Corks & Forks also provides a full schedule of cooking demonstrations and wine seminars.

The Summer Shade Festival is organized by The Grant Park Conservancy. Saturday morning welcomes the Adams Realtors 5K Run for the Park. Grant Park – the city’s oldest public park – was initially established by a gift of 100 acres from the estate of railroad magnate Lemuel Pratt Grant in 1883. Grant Park was once referred to as a resort area due to its natural flowing springs, carriage trails, shaded walking paths and big beautiful trees. Today, Grant Park welcomes more than 2 million visitors each year who still enjoy it as a place of respite in a now busy city.
The Grant Park Conservancy is a non-profit organization committed to the preservation, restoration and maintenance of historic L.P. Grant Park. www.gpconservancy.org

First Lady Hosts 8th Annual Easter Egg Hunt
8th Annual Governor’s Mansion Easter Egg Hunt to be held TOMORROW, Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Activities will include the Easter Egg Roll, an Egg Hunt, Egg Decorating and an Easter Basket Cupcake Creation Station. Entertainment will also consist of a moonwalk, face painting, balloon animals, a magician and the opportunity to take a picture with the Easter Bunny.

SFB kicks off its varied entertainment slate on April 2 with Easter Bunny visits and Easter hat crafts. After creating their top hat masterpieces, parents and kids can don their new bonnets and join the Easter Bunny Parade.
From April 6 to 10, Stone Mountain Park welcomes a special appearance by Laughing Pizza. Previously featured on the Today show, Laughing Pizza is a real family band that makes original music for kids, parents and loved ones alike. Their music videos are seen daily on public television stations by millions across the country, such as Georgia’s GPB – the third largest PBS station in the country. Laughing Pizza’s live performances are energetic, interactive, dance-filled shows that get kids and parents up and moving.
Another new activity to get families grooving is Dr. Busybody’s Boogiebot Blast. This dance party gets everyone moving to help Dr. Busybody’s fuel his Boogiebot robot. If the families dance and create “imagination,” the only thing that fuels Dr. Busybody’s Boogiebot, his robot comes alive. Guests also become part of the act with SFB’s all new IMPROV show. Families are in charge of the action when zany comedians take suggestions from the audience to come up with the most fantastic tales imaginable.
Also new this year to SFB, is the world’s only animated talking goat, Hilda. Previously featured on the Today show, Laughing Pizza is a real family band that makes original music for kids, parents and loved ones alike. Time to Talk Turkey
Turkey hunters across the state are practicing their yelps and clucks in preparation for the upcoming turkey season. Opening day is Sat., Mar. 20 and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division anticipates that the 2010 season should be good, and harvest levels should be similar in comparison to the past several years.
“There should be many vocal 2-year old gobblers available for harvest this year thanks to the high reproduction rate in the summer of 2008,” says Kevin Lowrey, Wildlife Resources Division wild turkey project coordinator.
Statistics from the 2009 season harvest summary indicate that an estimated 56,113 resident Georgia hunters bagged 27,323 turkeys last year. The bird to hunter ratio (harvest rate) for 2009 was .49 birds per hunter – the same as in 2007 and 2008.
According to Lowrey, Georgia’s current turkey population is estimated at 300,000 birds.
Georgia turkey hunters are privileged with one of the longest turkey seasons nationwide. With a bag limit of three gobblers per season, hunters have from Mar. 20through May 15 to harvest their bird(s). Because most hunters pursue wild turkeys on private lands, the Wildlife Resources Division reminds hunters to always obtain landowner permission before hunting.
WMA Hunting Opportunities
Georgia’s Wildlife Management Areas offer excellent turkey hunting opportunities. Through the WMA system, resident hunters have access to nearly one million acres of prime hunting land for just $19 a year. Success rates and total harvest numbers from 2009 may help indicate which WMAs hunters should target this year.
In the northwest, Crockford-Pigeon Mountain and Berry College WMA reported the highest harvest rates. In the northeast, Dukes Creek WMA and Wilson Shoals WMA had the highest harvest rates. In west central Georgia, hunters should try Joe Kurz WMA and Rum Creek WMA. In east central Georgia, Di-Lane Plantation WMA and Tuckahoe WMA reported high harvest rates. In the southeast, hunters should visit Dixon Memorial WMA and Sansavilla WMA. Middle Georgia hunter should try River Bend WMA Finally, in southwest Georgia, River Creek WMA and Chickasawhatchee WMA had the highest harvest rates.
A special WMA license is required for any person 16 years or older who does not possess a valid honorary, sportsman or lifetime license when hunting wild turkey on a WMA, Public Fishing Area or State Park. In addition, both a valid hunting license and a big game license are required to legally hunt wild turkey. Wild turkey legally can be hunted with shotguns, loaded with No. 2 or smaller shot, any muzzleloading firearm, longbow, crossbow or compound bow.
Conservation of the Wild Turkey in Georgia
The comeback of the wild turkey is one of Georgia’s great conservation success stories. Although the bird population currently hovers around 300,000 statewide, as recently as 1973, the wild turkey population was as low as 17,000. Intensive restoration efforts, such as the restocking of wild birds and increased emphasis on biologically sound hunting seasons, have helped re-establish turkeys in suitable habitat in every county. This resurgence is due to the efforts of private landowners, hunters and conservation organizations like the National Wild Turkey Federation.
The Georgia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation has donated more than $3,220,977 since 1985 on projects that benefit wild turkey and other wildlife. The NWTF works cooperatively in partnership with the Wildlife Resources Division and other land management agencies with the focus on habitat enhancement, hunter access, wild turkey research and education. There currently are 96 state chapters of the NWTF with membership totals of more than 16,000.

Atlanta Cyclorama Honors Black History Month
In recognition of Black History Month, the Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum will host two family events to celebrate, which are designed for families to come out and enjoy a fun and educational experience.
The first event on February 20, 2010 will feature renowned story teller Ms. Sylvia Hayes. She will recite and reenact renditions of slave stories and excerpts from other famous African American literature for your entertainment. Presentations will occur every hour from 12:30pm – 3:30pm before each guided tour.
The celebration continues on February 27, 2010 featuring Mrs. Beth Martin as she lectures on Traditional Southern Jargon. Mrs. Martin, Author of “Let Me Translate for Ya, Sugar” will discuss simplified southern-speak and phrases commonly used in Sothern culture. Mrs. Martin, aside from copies of her book, will also have “The South Rocks” t-shirts available for purchase. In addition, Civil War re-enactors will be on hand for guests to meet and greet and hear other great stories.
For kids of all ages, Black History Scavenger Hunt Kits will be available upon request.
Always available is the “Cyclorama Experience”, with its three dimensional diorama, surround sound, lighting and narration, enables the visitor a unique experience of “The Battle of Atlanta!” As your seats move around the painting our colorful heritage is made possible with narration in English, German, French, Japanese and Spanish.
Take your place in History and enjoy our colorful heritage at the Atlanta Cyclorama & Civil War Museum! Cult Classic “The Boondock Saints” Returns to Movie Theaters for 10th Anniversary

Ten years after emerging as a cult sensation, “The Boondock Saints” will return to the big screen in a special one-night presentation, The Boondock Saints 10th Anniversary Event, on Thursday, March 11th at 7:30 p.m. local time. Creator, writer and director Troy Duffy will introduce the event and share rare behind-the-scenes experiences and footage as well as exclusive interviews with cast and crew members including Norman Reedus (Murphy MacManus) and Sean Patrick Flanery (Connor MacManus), captured especially for this anniversary celebration. Audiences will also be treated to special performance clips by The Dirges, Ty Stone and Taylor Duffy whose music is part of the upcoming soundtrack to The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, along with a sneak peek into the mobile games, comic books and graphic novel currently in development.

Initially released in 2000 as a limited engagement to theaters following the Columbine tragedy, “The Boondock Saints” has gained a tremendous cult following, selling more than seven million DVDs to date. Acclaimed by critics and fans alike, “The Boondock Saints” is a story about fraternal twin brothers Connor & Murphy MacManus who embark upon a mission to rid Boston of human evil. After killing two members of the Russian mafia in self-defense, these hard-drinking brothers take the law into their own hands. No public outcry is heard and even FBI agent Paul Smecker begins to feel that the brothers are doing a good deed.
