Family and Youth Groups Heart of Agri-tainment Business for Uncle Shuck's Corn Maze
Puzzle Solving in Maze and Climbing Goats Provide New Autumn Entertainment
Making the shift from corporate America to “cornfield America” was a decision Georgia resident Mike Pinzl made in 2002 to spend more time with his family. As the ninth season commences in Dawson County, Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch has grown from 12,000 visitors in that first year to more than 40,000 visitors each fall. A large percent of business in September is attributable to group outings to the maze, such as Boy Scouts of America, church groups and special youth outings such as Foster Family Day.
Pinzl attributes the appeal of this annual fall pilgrimage to his 20-acre complex along the Etowah River to plain old family fun. “We offer a safe, clean and fun environment, and we are pleased to built a strong reputation and brand for the name Uncle Shuck’s,” said Mike Pinzl, known as “Uncle Shuck”, who is an active member of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, Dawson County Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the North American Farmers Direct Marketing Association.
“We support the chambers and do a fundraiser for the Dawson County High School and the Forsyth Explorers with our annual haunted maze. This year my wife Roxanne and I felt we could do something more for families in the community, especially for young people who need a loving place to call home. We added a Foster Family Day in September," Pinzl added.
Families who support foster children in Dawson, Forsyth, Hall, Lumpkin and White counties were invited to a complimentary evening at the maze on Saturday, September 11. There were 85 people who took part in this inaugural event, who were treated to a hayride, maze passes and allowed to feed the goats in the Great Goat Trek area. “My family had a great time. This was our first Corn Maze experience and it was a blast. We loved playing Farm Scene Investigation,” said one of the foster family parents.
Scout weekends attract 2,500 boys and girls over two weekends during the official start of autumn. Boy Scout Weekend will be Sept 25-26 and Girl Scout Weekend follows on Oct 2-3. All children who are part of Scout Weekends, or come in scout uniforms on other days, receive a combo ticket (maze and hay ride), a special Uncle Shuck’s patch, and access to a special demonstration by Smithgall Woods Education Center (11am to 4pm each day). The cost is $11 per scout. A November “Cousin Dozen” special is being promoted with Georgia’s official tourism web site, www.exploregeorgia.org.
The main attraction for all groups is still the 12-acre maze, which has two separate pathways cut through the living cornstalks form the intricate scales and veins of a giant Monarch butterfly. This season, visitors can not only “have fun getting lost”, but special maps provide clues in a “whodunit” game called Farm Scene Investigation. The game card is provided with admission for a new twist in the maze. On the festival grounds a new attraction for 2010 is the Great Goat Trek. A small herd of the nimble farm animals will climb along narrow walkways and a series of five platforms, ranging from three feet to 15 feet above the ground. Visitors can reward the goats by delivering special feed to the highest platform with a hand-held food delivery system. According to Pinzl, goats are natural climbers.
The Pumpkin Patch opens October 1, with gourds and pumpkins priced individually for customers. Also in October is the popular Haunted Maze, a separate one-mile path that opens after dusk as the “Husks of Horror”. The Haunted Maze will operate every Friday and Saturday night (dusk to 10 p.m.) in October, as well as a special Sunday, Oct 10 “Haunt Night”. The Haunted Maze is $12 per person, or $15 as a combo ticket, which is a fundraiser for the Forsyth County Explorers.
Regular admission prices are $9 per person for the maze; maze admission is free for children 3 and under. There are additional activities at the agri-tourism complex, such as a tractor-drawn hay ride along the Etowah River, bonfire area and corn cannon; fees vary (hay ride with marshmallow toasting at the bonfire is $5 per person). A combo ticket for $12 includes admission to the maze, a hay ride and a bonfire pass. There is no admission fee for the Picnic Pavilion, Kiddie CORNer (soybean maze, hay bales) or photo area.
Uncle Shuck’s Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch is located only 40 minutes from metro Atlanta, just two miles west from the North Georgia Premium Outlet Mall on Georgia Highway 53. For more information, visit www.uncleshucks.com, or follow the progress of the maze on Facebook.

Georgia National Fair Rides the Weather Roller Coaster Into One of Its 'Best' Years
The Georgia Agricultural Exposition Authority and staff say "thank you" to the 416,709 Fairgoers who attended the 20th anniversary Georgia National Fair. Despite the weather roller coaster, Fairgoers continued to show their support for and celebrate "20 Years of Georgia's Best."The 2008 attendance was 407,136.
"The Fair was an extremely satisfying fourth quarter win with time running out," said Ransom Moore, executive director. "It was very satisfying for the entire staff to see the fruits of their labor rewarded with an increase of nearly 10,000 Fair patrons over last year."
The Georgia National Fair was proud to introduce its new Livestock Equine Arena which was used for the first time by Georgia's 4-H and FFA students showing heifers, steers, market swine, breeding gilts, breeding ewes, sheep, commercial dairy heifers, market lambs, and market goats.
"The new show arena was an endorsement of the state's commitment to youth agricultural programs," Moore said. "These junior livestock shows are one of the major reasons the Fairgrounds was built. We are thrilled to host these shows, plus competitions and/or rallies for TSA, FCCLA, and FBLA."
The increase in Fair attendance also was welcome news for the Reithoffer Shows (midway rides), food concessionaires, commercial vendors, and sponsors. Many reported record sales and were pleased with Georgia's Fairgoers. Several vendors and sponsors are anxious to renew their contracts for 2010.
"The Georgia National Fair's phenomenal success is due to the families and their friends who attend the Fair and participate in its many events," Moore said.
The Fair set four days of record attendance: October 8 (up 75 percent), October 9 (17 percent), October 13 (30 percent) and October 18 (11 percent).
The Fair staff looks forward to seeing everyone for the 21st Georgia National Fair, October 7-17, 2010.
The Georgia National Fair has been designated a "Top 50 Fair" by Amusement Business magazine and www.carnivalwarehouse.com. Since its beginning in 1990, the Georgia National Fair has won 81 awards from the International Association of Fairs and Expositions for its livestock and horse events, competitive exhibits, and communications programs. The Fair has been designated a Southeast Tourism Society "Top 20 Event for October" 12 times (1991, 1996, 1997, 2000-2007, 2009). The Fair has received one "Special Events Directory and Events Business News Top 200 Event" award (1997). The Fair was designated one of Southern Living magazine's "Our Best 202 Things About the South First-Prize Fair" (2002).

Alegria Cirque du Soleil in Augusta Nov 25 - 29
Cirque du Sleil to present ALEGRIA this fall in Augusta
Limited engagement opens November 25, 2009
at the James Brown Arena
Tickets on Sale Now!
Cirque du Soleil is pleased to announce that the Alegría Arena Tour will stop in Augusta, GA this Fall. Alegría will perform 8 shows at the James Brown Arena from November 25 to 29, 2009.
Tickets for Alegría are now available online to the general public. To purchase tickets, go to www.cirquedusoleil.com/alegria.
Alegría is a Cirque du Soleil classic and an internationally acclaimed production that has entertained more than 10 million people worldwide since its world premiere in Montreal in April 1994. In May 2009, Alegría embarked on a new journey, performing in arenas throughout Canada and the United States, giving more people than ever the opportunity to enjoy a Cirque du Soleil show in their own town.
The Show
Alegría is a Spanish word that means happiness, joy and jubilation. An operatic introspection of the struggle for power and the invigorating energy of youth, Alegría relates the tale of power versus weakness, the king versus his jesters, and age against youth.
A kingdom without a king, Alegría is a world where everyone feels imbued with power —from impish court jester Fleur to the young and vital Bronx, to the aged and aristocratic Birds. Alegría is inhabited by minstrels, rogues, beggars, nobles, children and clowns, the only characters able to adapt to the changing times and the upheaval it brings. In this enigmatic, troubling world of profound changes and uncertainty, despite all the trials and tribulations, there is only one constant: the human spirit remains implacable.
Alegría features an international cast of 55 performers and musicians from 17 countries and showcases breathtaking acrobatics. Acts include the Synchro Trapeze and the high-speed, high-energy Aerial High Bars in which daring aerialists fly to catchers swinging more than 40 feet above the stage. The vibrancy of youth is alive in Power Track, a brilliant display of synchronized choreography and tumbling on a trampoline system hidden under the stage floor. In Russian Bars, artists fly through the air and perform spectacular somersaults and mid-air turns, landing on bars perched on the sturdy shoulders of catchers.
The third leg of the 2009 United States tour of Alegría will perform in:
Greenville, SC at the Bi-Lo Center from November 18 to 22, 2009.
Augusta, GA at the James Brown Arena from November 26 to 29, 2009.
Hampton, VA at the Hampton Coliseum from December 2 to 6, 2009.

The Haunted Theater on Hill Street
Main Street Players
invites you to walk through
The Haunted Theater on Hill Street
It’s Not What You See That Will Scare You.
It’s What You Don’t.
It’s not a play; it’s a frightening, “walk-through” experience.
Main Street Theatre presents “The Haunted Theater on Hill Street” Thursday, October 29th at 8PM; Friday, October 30th at 7:30PM and Halloween evening, Saturday, October 31st at 7:30PM.
It’s Halloween weekend, 2009. The audience has gone home. The theater is dark. No lights are on. The curtain is drawn. Total silence. Very ominous.
But in this darkness, something is very strange. An aura still lingers in the place. Is it on small stage? In the back rows? Backstage?
A fear of the unknown pervades the haunted theater --- as our “scare-actors” get very, very close --- but don’t touch.
Could it be an old actor begging for one last curtain call? An antique prop that carries with it more than dust?
The place may be abandoned, except for you. Hairs on the back of your neck raise. The not knowing sends shivers down your spine.
Join your fellow fearless explorers as your nightmare begins as we join hands to find out what’s behind the curtain on this most frightful of seasons…. Halloween 2009.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 29, 30 and 31, only the bravest guests of Main Street Theatre in historic downtown Griffin, Georgia will learn for sure who (or what) is in the darkened playhouse.
All tickets are $5.00 per soul. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
This first annual spooky family-fun event benefits the programs and community outreach activities of the nine-year-old Main Street Theater, 115 North Hill Street, in historic downtown Griffin, Georgia, fifty miles south of Atlanta,
For tickets and information, call 770-229-9916 or 770-233-0578 or visit www.mainstreetplayers.org.
The Ingram Foundation, Griffin and Spalding County patrons as well as the Grassroots Arts Program of the Georgia Council for the Arts support the Main Street Players.

Blue Morpho Month at Callaway Gardens' Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center
Butterfly Lovers Unite to Celebrate this Beautiful Blue Butterfly
September is Blue Morpho Butterfly Month at Callaway Gardens’ Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center. In addition to the more than 1,000 tropical butterflies flying freely throughout the conservatory, there will be hundreds of spectacular Blue Morpho butterflies.
The Blue Morpho (Morpho peleides) is a spectacular iridescent blue butterfly native to the rainforests of South and Central America. The undersides of the wings are brown with eyespots with a contrasting vivid blue color on the outer side. This iridescent color actually results from microscopic scales on the backs of their wings reflecting light, giving the brilliant shimmering blue appearance. As a Blue Morpho flies, its contrasting wing colors of bright blue and dull brown fool the eye and make the morpho look as if it is appearing and disappearing. The word ‘morpho’ actually means change or modify. The flash of the bright blue side of their wings actually startles predators, giving the butterfly time to escape harm. This tropical butterfly is usually a forest dweller but will venture into sunny areas occasionally. It is one of the largest butterflies with a wingspan of 5-8 inches.
Since they feed on juices of rotting fruit, they are usually easy to find in the Day Butterfly Center at the fruit feeders. Blue Morphos often fly in long chains of five or more to make a spectacular sight. Be sure to visit the Day Butterfly Center this month to view these magnificent creatures.
Due to the large size of the Blue Morphos, they make beautiful subjects as they float through the air for photos or video. The best time to photograph butterflies at the Day Butterfly Center is on sunny days before 10:00 a.m. or after 2:00 p.m. is on sunny days as they are most active between these hours.
Take a break and enjoy the Day Butterfly Center and the many other attractions of Callaway Gardens. Ask for the special Blue Morpho Overnight Package. To make a reservation, visit www.callawaygardens.com or call 1-800-CALLAWAY (225-5292). Based on availability, some restrictions apply.
Callaway Gardens®, is in Pine Mountain, Ga., 60 minutes southwest of Atlanta and 30 minutes north of Columbus.

The Sept. 15 date was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries — Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

UGA Field Day Aug. 19 at Midville, Ga., Farm
To showcase research and its importance to the agricultural industry in its region, the University of Georgia Southeast Research and Education Center in Midville, Ga., will have a field day Aug. 19.
Participants will see the latest work by UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences experts on twin-row soybeans, fungicide trials, insect control and official state variety trials for corn, soybean and peanut, said Anthony Black, the center’s superintendent.
Work at the Burke County center was postponed six years ago due to budget cuts. The center reopened last summer.
“Things have really picked up since the reopening,” Black said. “We have begun a new renewable energy program that focuses on the production of biofuel feedstock crops. I would say we are about up to full speed, and irrigated research land is about full capacity.”
The day starts at 9 a.m. Lunch will be provided. To find out more, call (706) 542-1060.

Fernbank Museum Announces Viewers’ Choice IMAX® Film Festival
Fernbank Museum of Natural History is putting audience members in the driver’s seat for selecting its fall line-up. The Museum will kick off an IMAX® Film Festival on August 17, showcasing 6 of the most popular IMAX® films ever shown at Fernbank.
As part of the film festival, the IMAX® schedule will change every two weeks from August 17-October 1, 2009. Fernbank is launching a Festival Flex Pass for the festival, which includes six IMAX tickets that can be used to see each film, or that can be divvied up among groups, families, friends and various films throughout the festival. The Festival Flex Pass is available for $45 for members and $60 for non-members, and can also be used for Martinis & IMAX® on Friday nights. Individual IMAX tickets are $13 for adults, $12 for students/seniors, $11 for children and $8 for members. Individual Martinis & IMAX tickets are $15.
If you want to go on a cinematic climb to the top of Mt. Everest, voyage into the depths of caves, dive into the ocean’s coral reefs, swim alongside dolphins, explore ancient Greece, take a river rafting adventure through the Grand Canyon, journey into the jungle to see gorillas, or explore another enthralling subject, you have to vote.
“This is the first time we’ve ever left the IMAX schedule completely in the hands of the public. We’re excited to see which films are people’s favorites,” said Jennifer Grant Warner, Senior Vice President and Chief Programming Officer at Fernbank Museum of Natural History. “There are a lot of compelling IMAX films that people long to see again. And because the IMAX format is so powerful, you can’t get the same experience by watching it on DVD, so this is really a great opportunity to see your favorite IMAX film again.”
Voting begins July 7 and runs through July 26. The Festival line-up will be announced July 27. Everyone who casts a vote at www.fernbankmuseum.org/VOTE will be entered to win a year’s worth of IMAX® passes (a total of 25 IMAX passes). Three runners-up will receive a Festival Flex Pass.
Voters can choose their favorite three films from the following:

Motown comes to The Fred with The Spinners
The Lexus of South Atlanta Summer concert series continues with The Spinners performing on July 17th and 18th at The Fred (Peachtree City). The legendary Motown and R& B group will take the stage each night at 9 pm, with local group Shavaughn opening at 8 pm.
The Spinners have always made timeless music. Their classic group sound and approach never loses its universal appeal. Throughout the years they have acquired twelve (12) gold records with hits on top of both Pop and R&B charts and they are one of the few groups who can boast of four lead singers. Today, original members Bobbie Smith, Henry Fambrough, and Pervis Jackson are joined onstage by leadsinger Charlton Washington, high tenor Harold “Spike” Bonhart and a soul infused5-piece band.
In 1972, The Spinners signed with Atlantic Records and teamed up with producer Thom Bell, setting into motion an amazing recording career. A partial list of their hit singles on Atlantic include “Mighty Love,” “Then Came You,” “I’ll Be Around,” “One Of A Kind (Love Affair),” “Games People Play,” and “Could It Be.” In 1979, The Spinners completed their first collaboration with producer Michael Zager, and by early 1980, the single, “Working My Way Back to You,” was topping Pop and R&B charts giving the group its 12th gold record. The Love Trippin’ album’s release included “The Cupid Medley,” one of the fastest selling records in The Spinners’ career. The follow-up album, Labor of Love, featured such standout tunes as “Yesterday Once More,” and “Long Live Soul Music.” With the release of “Can’t Shake This Feeling,” their fourth LP in just over two years, the quintet entered a brand new phase of their remarkable career as they joined the award winning producing/ writing/playing team of James
Mtume and Reggie Lucas. Other past releases include songs on the motion picture soundtracks of “Twins” and “Spaceballs,” and a single on Arista Records, a duet with Dionne Warwick entitled “Then Came You.”

Environmental Film Festival Comes to the Coast This Fall
Franklin County will host the nationally acclaimed Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour August 29 - September 5 in Carrabelle, Apalachicola, St. George Island, St. Teresa and neighboring Wewahitchka in Gulf County. Organized by the Apalachicola Riverkeeper Group, the week-long film festival will feature award-winning films and a children's program designed to raise awareness about environmental issues nationwide.
The films will be shown in the historic Dixie Theatre in Apalachicola, the Carrabelle City Auditorium, FSU's Coastal and Marine Laboratory in St. Teresa, the Volunteer Fire Department on St. George Island and the Tupelo Theater in Wewahitchka.
The 2010 Film Festival will be the second year such an event has come to North Florida. Last year, the Riverkeepers hosted a similar successful one day festival in Tallahassee. According to Riverkeeper Executive Director Andy Smith, the event's success in Tallahassee was the motivation to expand the film festival to the coast.
"Last year we hosted a one-day Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour in Tallahassee," says Smith. "Everyone loved the films for their inspirational, innovative, effective, and often humorous approach to stubborn problems. They make you feel good about what we can do to make our world a better place for everyone."
The Wild & Scenic Film Festival brings together a selection of films from the annual festival held the second week of January in Nevada City, California. "The films tell a story about our planet, highlighting issues, providing solutions and giving a call to action," says Tour Manager, Susie Sutphin. "Their collective energy empowers communities to initiate conversations that can bring about compromise and collaborative efforts that positively impact our wild places." The Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival was started by the watershed advocacy group, the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL) in 2003. SYRCL is sharing their success as an environmental group with others organizations to bring the festival to over 90 communities nationwide. It is building a network of grassroots organizations connected by a common goal of using film to inspire conservation. The festival's namesake is in celebration of achieving Wild & Scenic status for 39 miles of the South Yuba River in 1999.
Some of the films scheduled include:
Water Front - 22 minutes, Liz Miller, Curtis Smith - What if you lived by the largest body of fresh water in the world but could no longer afford to use it? Residents of Highland Park, Michigan, known as the birthplace of the auto-industry, have received water bills as high as $10,000; they have had their water turned off, their homes foreclosed, and are struggling to keep water, a basic human right, from becoming privatized. The Apalachicola Riverkeepers Group was formed in 1999 as an environmental citizen's advocacy organization. This year, the group is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Since 1999, the group has worked with concerned citizens to protect the Apalachicola ecosystem and the livelihood of people who depend on it for a living. The group uses persistent advocacy to attack tough problems like the environmentally destructive dredging of the middle reaches of the river and ecologically unsustainable development. The Apalachicola Riverkeeper collaborates with diverse groups to design and implement river and shoreline restoration projects, put on educational programs like the Franklin County Seahawk - Art for the Sky, and an annual Franklin County coastal cleanup.
The Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival On Tour is sponsored, in part, by the Franklin County Tourist Development Council and national sponsors such as Patagonia, Clif Bar, Osprey Packs, Sierra Nevada Brewing and Tom's of Maine. Local and regional sponsors include Trail and Ski, The Wilderness Way, Theriaque Vorbeck & Spain, the Real Estate Conservation Group, Apalachicola Bay Chamber, Carrabelle Waterfront Partnership, Carrabelle CARES, St. George Island Civic Club, Tupelo Theater, and the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory.

The story touches on the very essence of our democratic system and is an unnerving indication of what is in store for residents around the world facing their own water struggles. Best of Fest, Hazel Wolf Environmental FF.
